What is our problem?
The problem is not the problem. The problem is the way you view the problem.
The first couple of times I heard this statement I loved it because it sounds cool. 😎
It wasn’t until recently that I truly understood the depth of the saying.
We as humans have an idea about what reality is. Unfortunately a lot of the time our view of what is real and what is really real are not the same. I simply mean that reality that humans grasp their reality by markings of their unique cognoscitive powers.
Many people are under the impression that fat = unhealthy
Thereby being skinny = healthy (1+1=2).
How does one remove said fat to become “healthy”? By going on a diet.
How does one stick to a diet? What do you mean? You just do it!
When we think this way it is very obvious to see why we are having a hard time living and sustaining a healthy lifestyle.
With this type of mindset the way we become “healthy” is by going on a diet. At first, the diet we choose gives us some sort of result.
Once the results start slowing down and we only lose <1 pound a week the diet must not be working.
If that’s the case it makes sense to ditch the diet and try something else.
Wait one moment, how do you know all of this? Who told you that weight loss is 21 lbs in 30 days? Who said that losing over a pound a week is what needs to be happening?
Biologically speaking, when you look at how the body works you can start to see that losing 0.5 – 1lbs a week is a fantastic outcome.
Most people do not experience a 5 pound weight reduction every week.
There may be weeks with no weight loss and even weeks with weight gain (gasp!)
Diving into human psychology, it’s clear that sayings like, “Just do it,” or “All you need is a little bit of discipline,” are just that, sayings. Especially with the high demanding stressful lives we lead.
Discipline is a skill.
Skills can be taught and need to be learned.
In today’s society, eating healthy isn’t just following a simple diet.
In order to achieve long term results —
I’m talking about results that will last you a lifetime
YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE.
But if you believe that dieting is the way to go; that you need to lose weight quickly ‘first’ – you will be stuck on a yo-yo.
When you see that losing 0.5-1lbs a week is great (and really believe in that truth!) —
When you look at a scale as a device that shows you your progression in your diet instead of the end-all-and-be-all of you as a person (and not get discouraged by fluctuating numbers) —
You can understand that it isn’t the diets fault; it isn’t anyone’s fault.
It is just an indication that what you are doing, at the moment, is not the right course of action.
If you want to improve your results, improve what you are doing day-to-day.
But because your perception tells you, “No. Weight loss is supposed to be following a diet and diets only work if I lose 3+ pounds a week,” then as soon as you lose < 3 pounds = automatic failure.
This results in you becoming trapped in the vicious cycle of dieting.
You become your own prisoner.
HAVE COMPASSION!
On yourself and others.
Having someone to help you see what is really true is something that you cannot do on your own.
The thing is, as humans, we have an ego. 😱
When someone disagrees with us, especially on things we so deeply believe to be true, it is only natural that we argue back.
To protect our ego, we come up with 50 reasons why our way of thinking is right and that the advice you’ve been given – although maybe good, doesn’t apply to you in your situation.
This is very typical when it comes to family. Family members are emotionally attached and are extremely invested in one another. It hurts to see your spouse or child eat foods that aren’t good for them. We can’t help but say something.
They know that cake is not good for them. The reason why they are having the cake is not because it is good for them. They are having it because they want it.
When we come along with our “helpful” comments it is only human to justify the action.
To help someone view the situation differently it takes skill. It takes practice.
A good health coach would be able to work with you to help you see what is real.
And we’re back to:
The problem is not the problem but the way you look at the problem.
At the Smith System we make it a priority to get to know our clients.
To see them as they are.
The demands and commitments they have in their day.
The stress levels they are dealing with.
We work together to build the lifestyle you only dream of having.
We don’t just help each client see the truth, we also give each client the tools and strategies they need to help build the life they want.
When we learn a new thing or start a new diet we feel excited!
Once we start to apply the techniques we see it isn’t as glamorous as we thought, the newness fades away, that is about the time where we start dropping the ball.
At the Smith System we make sure this never happens.
Our one-on-one coaching session challenges our clients. We help ensure that you will be doing everything you can to progress yourself forward.
It isn’t about making a perfect plan and then demanding that you change your life to fit the plan.
It is about
- Knowing what ultimate health looks like, seeing you as a person and bridging the gap between your reality and your goals.
- Teaching you how to be disciplined and giving you an opportunity to practice discipline.
- Showing you how to adapt the right tools into your life.
- Being your support team and helping you move forward and adjust as life throws one challenge after another.
- Having the accountability to inspire you to show up as your very best!
Does it sound like a lot of work? You bet!
With the right coach and the right team in your corner this process of change can be made a little bit more enjoyable.
It can be done with a little bit less friction.
This is what a coach can do for you!
Committed to your success,
